BOSTON, April 7, 2020 – Starburst, the Presto company, today announced core features in the Q1 release of Starburst Enterprise Presto, as well as Presto version 332, that significantly bolster Presto performance, security, and value for the data science community.
Presto was created in 2012 at Facebook by David Phillips, Martin Traverso, and Dain Sundstrom, and open-sourced in 2013. Today, thousands of companies across the globe use Presto to provide fast & interactive query performance while effectively scaling costs on big data infrastructure. Starburst was founded in 2017 to offer enterprise-grade Presto to the masses, delivering security, performance, and support at scale. Starburst employs the creators and leading committers of the open source project.
This major release combines features that have been contributed back to the open source project as well as curated for Starburst Enterprise Presto customers. For more information on this major release, register for the upcoming webinar or read the blog.
“It’s essential that we keep pushing the envelope on the speed of data access while expanding the security features our customers need,” said Matt Fuller, Starburst Co-Founder and VP, Product. “This release is heavily driven by customer demand for faster data access, while controlling who has access to what data, across every data source.”
Faster data access, across all data sources
Caching
Starting with version 332, Open Source Presto now has embedded caching in response to customer demand for faster performance across frequently accessed data. While already widely deployed among leading companies for ad-hoc SQL, BI, and reporting use cases, Presto is now able to take on new use cases such as:
Presto caching is now available in beta preview with Presto 332 for caching data from data lakes (object storage, Hadoop, etc.), while Starburst Enterprise Presto with Caching offers additional features and support, and will soon be able to cache data across any data source.
“The Presto community is stronger than ever and we thank all of those who contributed to this feature,” said Presto co-creator and Starburst co-founder Martin Traverso.
Optimized Delta Lake Reader
Delta Lake, open-sourced by Databricks in 2019, allows for data modification in data lakes. Key benefits are the ability to conduct ACID transactions, scalable metadata handling, and schema enforcement while being fully compatible with Apache Spark APIs.
Now Databricks customers can take advantage of the speed, concurrency, and scalability that Presto is known for, to query their Delta Lake. With this new reader, Starburst Enterprise Presto makes it possible to extend the benefits of data enrichment to data lakes. This bridges functional gaps between data warehouses and data lakes and gives joint Starburst + Databricks clients greater cost control, flexibility, and speed of access to mutable data in data lakes.
Starburst is hosting a separate webinar exclusively focused on the Delta Lake Reader.
Ensuring Fine-Grained Access Control, across all data sources
Global Security
Starburst Enterprise Presto now includes a single control point for fine-grained access control across all data sources. Global Security also reduces vulnerabilities by providing a simpler way to ensure consistent access across sources.
Other key features in the Starburst Enterprise Presto release include Okta integration, Ranger integration, enhanced audit logging and usage metrics, and an Oracle Parallel Connector. Another key feature contributed to Open Source Presto (and available in Starburst Enterprise Presto) is IAM Credential Passthrough for AWS customers.

About Starburst
Starburst is on a mission to power analytics anywhere. We help companies quickly unlock the value of their data by making it easy to access. We do this with Presto, an open source SQL query engine that enables data consumers to access any data where it lies. Starburst Enterprise Presto is purpose-built to ensure Presto security & performance at scale. Starburst also provides enterprise-grade features and 24×7 support from the Presto experts. Organizations like Zalando, Grubhub, Comcast, and FINRA rely on Starburst to execute fast queries across their data lake, and even federate queries across different sources. Stop moving data, start using data. For more information: www.starburstdata.com
