BOSTON, April 14, 2020 – Starburst, the Presto company, announced today the launch of Presto: The Definitive Guide, published by O’Reilly Media. This is the first book published about the Presto distributed query engine and marks a major milestone in the history of the open source project.
The book is co-authored by Matt Fuller, co-founder of Starburst, Martin Traverso, co-creator of Presto and co-founder of Starburst, and Manfred Moser, community advocate and software engineer at Starburst.
Presto was created in 2012 at Facebook by David Phillips, Martin Traverso, and Dain Sundstrom. It was built to solve for faster and more accurate analytics at massive scale, and open-sourced in 2013. Traditional data warehouse solutions require companies to duplicate and move data prior to analysis, in an effort to achieve a “single source of truth”. Presto instead establishes a “single point of access” allowing teams to access the data directly where it lives – no movement or copies required. This brings tremendous speed and accuracy benefits to business teams who need faster access to data to drive their organizations.
“An O’Reilly animal book is a major milestone for any open source project,” said Justin Borgman, Co-founder & CEO of Starburst. “I’m incredibly proud of Martin, Matt, Manfred, and the countless hours they invested in bringing Presto: The Definitive Guide to life. As a thank you to the devoted community of Presto contributors, users, and fans, Starburst is making the entire digital book available for free for a limited time.”
Starburst is launching a virtual book tour series where attendees can meet the authors of Presto: The Definitive Guide, as well as the co-creators of Presto, and enjoy an Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) session moderated by various industry experts. Attendees automatically get a free digital copy of the book. Learn more and register here.
About Starburst
Starburst is on a mission to power analytics anywhere. We help companies quickly unlock the value of their data by making it easy to access. We do this with Presto, an open source SQL query engine that enables data consumers to access any data where it lies. Starburst Enterprise Presto is purpose-built to ensure Presto security & performance at scale. Starburst provides additional enterprise-grade features, more connectors to access an even wider range of data sources, and 24×7 support from the Presto experts. Organizations like Zalando, Grubhub, Comcast, and FINRA rely on Starburst to execute fast queries across their data lake, and federate queries across different sources.
