Hi, I am a little bit confused that while using Trino on my machine I can query and joindata from any database irrespective of the region or cloud but in startburst I am bound to create a cluster in the same region as my data resides in and I am unable to query cross-region data. Is it the shortcoming in startburst or I am missing something. New to starburst and I really hope that latter is the case.
Thanking You Community
I’m guessing you are using Starburst Galaxy and trying it out with a free cluster. If so, the limitations are more about setting up the access AND (even more about) the costs with cross-region (and cross-provider) access. If you are using Starburst Enterprise (running wherever) then you’ll have as much control to access data anywhere you can grant yourself access to and pay for any applicable data access fees.
So, no, this isn’t necessarily a shortcoming of Starburst.
Definitely share some more of what you are doing and we’ll see if we can help you out with more details if you need them.
Hi @lester thank you for your reply and guiding me. Yes I am using starburst galaxy free trial. but whichever cluster I create not necessarily the free one. I can attach to the data only to the data resources in the same region and the same cloud. I feel very limited.
Well @sheharyar it seems I was wrong. The cross-region querying is still in a “private preview” mode in Galaxy as detailed at Starburst | Cross-region support, but that link tells you how to request it be added to your account. Obviously, if you set up Starburst Enterprise yourself you’ll have the same freedoms as you have with Trino itself. If you request this feature to be enabled and have any problems, please let us know. Thanks!
